What is Sprint Velocity?
Sprint velocity is the average number of story points a team completes per sprint. Averaged over recent sprints, it lets you forecast how long a backlog will take.
Sprints to clear backlog = backlog points ÷ average velocity
How to read your result
- Average the last 3–5 sprints for a stable velocity.
- Velocity is a planning aid, not a productivity target.
- Don't compare velocity between teams — points are relative.
- A wildly swinging velocity signals inconsistent estimation.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate sprint velocity?
